I was born and bred in Oklahoma and have lived in Oklahoma my whole life. I grew up in near the Cherokee Nation but have lived the past 20 years in the heart of the Choctaw Nation. I have eaten fry bread my whole life and today, I am going to teach you how to make real, authentic Indian fry bread.
For those that are not familiar with Indian fry bread, it is a flatbread that is fried in oil. Most tribes have their own variation of fry bread but they all are quite similar.
· 2 c. flour
· 1 c. milk
· 1 T. baking powder
· 1 tsp. salt
Mix together the flour, baking powder and salt. Add the milk and stir until you get a thick dough. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and tear off pieces and shape them into a ball and roll each one out into a small disc. Make each one about 7”. Deep fry each one in a cast iron skillet with about ½”-1” of oil until they are golden-brown (about 2-3 minutes per side).
The fry bread can be eaten as is or drizzle with honey or syrup or sprinkled with powdered sugar.
They can also be turned into an Indian Taco by topping with the following suggestions:
· 1 lb. ground beef or pork sausage, cooked with taco seasoning
· Chopped tomato
· Chopped onions
· Black olives
· Shredded cheddar cheese
· Shredded lettuce
· Taco sauce
