Homemade sausage gravy is a true Southern classic breakfast dish and one of my all-time favorite foods. My son Ronny and I could eat it every single day and never grow tired of it. My sausage gravy recipe is easy to make and tastes delicious so there is no reason for it not to go into your weekly rotation.
A true hearty breakfast that you can have on the table in less than 30 minutes. So good over some homemade biscuits.
Ingredients:
3-3 1/2 c. milk
1/3 c. all-purpose flour
1 lb. breakfast sausage
2 T. butter
1 tsp. pepper
1/2 tsp. salt
Brown your sausage in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook until no pink remains. Once the sausage is browned (do not drain), turn your stove to medium-low heat, add in the butter and let it melt and then sprinkle in about half of the required flour.
Stir and let the sausage get covered in the flour. Add in more flour a little at a time until all the flour has been added. Allow it to cook for one minute and then slowly pour in the milk, a half cup at a time, whisking the entire time.
Keep whisking and cook until it becomes thick and bubbly. Stir in the salt and pepper and serve over biscuits.
We also make a great Chocolate Gravy to serve over biscuits too.
