Creamed peas are one of those recipes that remind me of when I was a child. It is a super comforting dish that is simple to make but is delicious for any day of the week or as a lovely side dish to a holiday meal. We enjoy it so much that I serve it several times a month.
· 4 c. frozen peas, thawed or canned peas
· 2 c. milk
· 1/3 c. heavy cream
· 3 T. butter
· 3 T. all-purpose flour
· ½ tsp. sugar
· ½ tsp. pepper
· ¼ tsp. salt
· ¼ tsp. onion powder
· ¼ tsp. garlic powder
In a medium sized saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour, onion powder and garlic powder. Whisk until the mixture is smooth. Turn the heat to medium-high and then slowly whisk in the milk. Keep stirring until the mixture thickens, which will probably take 4-5 minutes. Stir in the sugar, salt and pepper. Add in the peas and the heavy cream and stir and heat another 2-3 minutes and then serve.
Serves 8 with each serving having about 15 carbs each.
Serves with some of my other great side dishes such as: Broccoli & Cheese Risotto, Blue Ribbon Winning Baked Beans, or my Creamy Potato Casserole.
