Easy Homemade Flour Tortillas

Forgot about store-bought flour tortillas, just make up a batch in the comfort of your own home.  It takes less than a half hour and they are super easy to make.  So much better than ones you can buy! They turn out tender, soft and delicious!

  • 4 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½-2/3 c. hot (almost boiling) water
  • ¼ c. lard (can substitute with butter or olive oil)
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt

In a medium sized mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt together.  Mix in the lard, using your fingers, until the mixture looks like course cornmeal.  Slowly add in the water a bit at a time until the dough comes together.  It is important that the water be super-hot.  The hot water disrupts the proteins of the flour and gives you a very tender dough that you are looking for when making tortillas.

Once it becomes a nice dough, pour out the dough onto a floured counter or tabletop.  Knead the dough for a good 1 ½-2 minutes or until the dough is elastic and smooth.

Take the lovely dough and divide it up to about 24 pieces that are roughly the same size and then roll each piece into a ball.

Preheat a gently oiled, large cast iron skillet (or a non-stick skillet) over medium-high heat.  Roll out each dough ball into a round tortilla.  It’s personal preference how thin to roll them out.  I usually roll mine out into 7”-8” diameter.  Place each uncooked tortilla into the hot skillet and cook until it bubbles up some and light brown spots for on the tortilla.  Flip and cook the other side the same way.  Repeat with all the tortillas.

Serve immediately or store in a covered container in the refrigerator until ready to use.

They reheat nicely by placing them on a plate and putting a damp paper towel in between each one and microwaving from 15-30 seconds.  The recipe can easily be doubled too.  We often double the recipe because we go through them so quickly.

Use these homemade flour tortillas in recipes of mine including:  Easy Ham & Ranch Pinwheels, Incredible Apple Pie Enchiladas, EasyPizza Quesadillas, and my recipe for Chicken Enchiladas.
