Cheap Flea Killer for Dogs

flea killer, natural flea killer, safe flea killer, pet rescue, animal rescue, frugal living
I did animal rescue for about 15 years and have learned a few tips and tricks. One thing I learned is a cheap way to get rid of fleas on your dogs. Blue Dawn dish washing detergent will kill the fleas on your dog and does not harm your dog. It will not keep fleas off but will kill all of the ones on your dog. Just be sure to purchase the old style blue Dawn.
You can give your dog a bath and use the Dawn as the shampoo and all fleas will be dead or you can fill a spray bottle with water and add a few drops of Dawn soap in, shake and then spray onto the dogs skin and coat. It works great.
Do you have any tips to share?

  2. A neighbor told us about giving our dog one garlic capsule and one brewers yeast tablet every day to repel fleas and ticks. We used it last year and it was very successful. She wouldn't take the pills by themselves, so we just put them in a blob of peanut butter and she gobbled them right down.

    1. Rebecca, you are right. Another alternative is to sprinkle garlic powder on their feed and put a little apple cider vinegar (like a capful) in their water. Both help tremendously.

    1. Cheree, I would not recommend trying it on a cat. Cat's lick themselves and I would not like to be responsible if it harmed your cat in some way. The garlic in the food or vinegar in the water, I have tried both those methods on my cats and dogs though. Thank you for reading!

  6. Just stumbled onto your blog and find it very useful. I have added 1 Tbs of pine oil to my dogs bath water to kill fleas. Works well.

    Great job on your blog!

  9. I boiled lemon slices and mint in water for an hour, let it cool, then sprayed furniture with it, washed floors with it, even put it in my Rainbow shampooer and did the carpets with it. I also used some lavender essential oils on the dogs and sprayed some on carpets/furniture. It seems to be working well.

One of our dogs is still itching, but I think it's leftover dermatitis rather than remaining fleas. I've read that stinging nettles tea added to their water can help. I'm going to give that a try.

  10. We use this and have for a few years now. We also add a cap full of apple cider vinegar to the Dawn bath mixture. That keeps the fleas off! Pups smell a bit like a pickle at first, but you get used to it! ;-)
