Construction of New Goat Shelter

We have been needing a new goat shelter for our pygmy nannies.  We have 5 goats in a large pen but their old shelter was in disarray and needed a new shelter before kidding starts in early March.  In the pen, we have Daisy Mae (pygmy fainting goat), her mother Brownie, Dorkling, Gracie, and her daughter Belle.

We make our goat shelters fairly small for a reason.  When the shelters are big, there are drafts and a lot of unused and unnecessary space.  By making our goat shelters small, then animals are able to share body heat, thus stay warmer in the cold winter months.

The first thing my hubby did was go and cut down a few cedar trees to make the posts to frame the building.

Then he will mark off where the posts will set.

Then dig the holes.  We have a post hole digger that makes easy work of it (that is if you have the muscles and endurance).

Once the holes are dug, he places the cut posts into the holes and packs them in well.

Ron next went out into the woods and cut down some pine trees.  After they were cut down he used his sawmill and cut the pine logs into boards.  Once they are cut, he begins securing them to the posts.

In the picture above, you can see the shape of the shelter and see it is coming together.

Part of the front is framed up to be a wind break for the goats as you can see in the photo below.

He just needed to add a top and cover it with plastic and it was done.

Here is a real short video of the finished shelter.
