Farm Animals

I was out walking around our property recently and was enjoying visiting with the farm animals.  They each have their own personality and I never get tired of looking at them or taking their picture.  If this is not your thing, just skip today's post and I'll see you tomorrow.  :-)

Our blue Cochin chicken

Our nanny Boer goat.

Jasper

Mozart, our tufted duck

Don't you just love his pompadour and his coloring?!

Sheera, our guard dog.  We love her so much and she is so protective of our family.

She is a mixed breed.  Her father was a  Polish rooster and her mother  was the blue Cochin.

"Y"...well just because.  (lol)

The woods are still pretty in the winter time.

Rooster crowing and duck quacking

Just our rooster looking around

Red Rangers Update

As you may remember, I received baby chicks from Hoover's Hatchery awhile back.  These are the fastest growing chicks that we have ever raised.  They are nice and plump and I can't wait to try butchering one to see how they taste.  We plan on butchering next week

These chicks pictured are just 14 weeks old.  Awesome, right?  Tune in next week for the butchering adventure and our opinion on the taste of the meat!

Red Rangers: Part 2

The small flock of Red Rangers we got from Hoover's Hatchery are really growing fast.  They are growing faster than most other chicks we have ever raised.  They are also turning into some beautiful little birds.  See for yourself!

Mail Order Chicks from Hoover's Hatchery

Today in the mail we received 30 Red Ranger baby chicks from Hoover's Hatchery.  All 30 arrived alive and looking really healthy. We are so excited about these new little chicks and recommend Hoover's Hatchery if you are in the market for new chicks.

The chicks in their shipping box.

These sweet little guys are now resting comfortably in a nice large secure area in my home office.  They have fresh bedding, chick feed, a heat lamp and fresh water to help them get a good start in life.  We have added a bit of sugar to the water to help them get situated after the stressful trip but have great faith they will do well.
We will be posting updates about these little guys.  They are supposed to have a high livability rate and be ready to dress in about 11 weeks.  We hear they taste remarkable too.  I'll let you know our verdict in the weeks to come!

New Chicken Coop

My hubby and 15 year old son spent last week building a new chicken pen and today they moved 11 of our layers into it.  They LOVED it!  Just thought you'd enjoy seeing some pictures...
Let's have some fun and see if you know your chickens.  Look at the pictures and see if you can "Name that chicken Breed".

Chicken "A" is the dark chicken on the left.  Chicken "B" is the red chicken in the back.

Chicken "C"

Chicken "D"

Chicken "E"

Chicken "F"

Chicken "G" and Chicken "H"

In a few days, I'll list each of the chicken breeds and see how my followers have done!

Our 1st Fertilized Eggs

We are so excited.  Remember back in March, we purchased some baby chicks.  Well, they grew up and one of them was a rooster.  :-)  Today, we had an egg in the nest.  This afternoon there was another one.  One of the Rhode Island Red's is a laying!  I can't wait for the baby chicks.
We have had chickens for quite some time now.  We bought our starter flock from a family in Arkansas. In fact, today, August 7th, we have had these girls for exactly a year now.  They were all 18 months to 2 years old and were all layers.  They have given us some wonderful eggs this past year.  Actually for the past 2 weeks we have barely gotten an egg and found out why2 nights ago.  A 4 foot long poisonous, black and red snake was in the coop eating an egg.  It is now dead and we are getting eggs again.
The daddy is a White Polish Crested Rooster and the momma is a Rhode Island Red.  We also have a Plymouth Rock female, another Rhode Island Red, and a Rhode Island White in with this rooster.  I am excited to see they babies to see their coloring.
I will take some pictures soon and post them of how chickens.  Our blue silkie is soooo gorgeous and "Top Notch" the rooster is beautiful.  The cool thing about him is he has bright purple on his wattle.  Very cool.
