Chickens: Our starting flock

This is one of the Plymouth Rocks we got.

We began our chicken adventure back on August 7, 2011 with the purchase of our first flock of chickens. I am so glad we did too. These five layers have provided us with a lot of joy and a LOT of eggs. We consistently get 3-5 eggs a day, everyday, from these 5 ladies. That is more than the average for the breeds but they are really happy here and love us like we love them.
We have one Plymouth Rock, a Cuckoo Maran, a Golden Lace Wyandotte, a Cinnamon Queen and a Blue Silkie. I need to get more recent pictures of our girls because they are so beautiful now. The Blue Silkie is simply gorgeous and takes your breath away.
We are heavy eaters in our family and since we have had these five girls, I have yet to buy eggs from the store. We eat a sausage and egg casserole several days a week and I do a lot of baking but these girls keep up our demand.

This is the Plymouth Rock chick eyeing everything.

They are checking out the pen and the bigger chickens. They adapted well and seem happy out there. They are enjoying the fresh bugs to eat!

Deep in concentration on his work!

As you can tell by the pictures, my husband and our 14 year old son built a new pen and coop for the young chicks who were ready to be moved out. We built the 2nd pen/coop for two reasons. First because we want to keep the chicks isolated from our chickens so they can get to know each other and not injure the little ones and secondly, we will want a coop for our layers and one for the broilers. Our new chicks

Buff laced polish, polish chicken, rare chicken breed, crested chicken, white polish chicken

This is one we call "Top Notch" for now because of his "hair" on his head. I say "he" because he acts like a rooster to us. We'll know for sure before too long. We believe he is a Buff Laced Polish or a White Polish. Do you agree?

polish chicken, cinnamon queen, rhode island red, plymouth rock, silver cubalaya, cubalaya chicken, buff orpingtonThis was taken about 2 1/2 weeks after we brought them home from a farm & country store. Guess they have already outgrown this enclosure. Love how they are all nesting on the top of the rim. :-) First chick we suspect to be a Polish, next a Cinnamon Queen, the next 2 we think are Rhode Island Reds, a Plymouth Rock and on the far right end we think she is a Silver Cubalaya or a Buff Oprington. Agree or not?

new chicks, care of baby chicks, care of baby chickens, Here they are after we had them a 2 weeks. We got 8 total. We moved them to their outside "teenager" enclosure when we had them for 4 weeks. They are doing great out there.

We purchased 6 more chicks on April 6th. (Pics to come later). The new ones are all crested. A few looks to have beards so we are excited to see what kind they all turn out to be.
