Rescued Kitten: Our newest household member

Just wanted to share with you all the newest addition to our household.  This here is "FredElmo".

My 7 year old son named him, betcha couldn't have figured that out on your own.  :-)   We went to visit our daughter in Stillwater recently and on the way home we stopped at an animal shelter.  I have been doing rescue for over 15 years and just felt compelled to stop at this one.  My 7 year old and I went in and looked around and lo and behold this little guy was in a pen looking scared to death.  The lady in charge said their shelter was not equipped for cats so they would have to put it down.  She said it was a feral cat and I told her we lived over 2 hours away and had no way of transporting the kitten that far if it was wild.  She gave us the kitten (for free) and gave us a carrier to take it home with.  She was great!
Needless to say, when we finally reached home and let it out, the kitten was not feral at all.  The poor thing had just been scared to death because of all the dogs in the kennel.  This is the most loving and gentle kitten and is now my 7 year old's first pet.  Anytime I am at my desk, he crawls into my shirt, turns itself around and falls asleep.

Thanks for letting us share with you all today.  Furry hugs to each of you.

  1. he is too cute... we have two kitties inside that we "rescued" from God only knows what fate when a lady was sitting in front of our local walmart with a rabbit cage full of two litters.. I just couldn't help myself and we needed a good mouser lol so I took two. They are feral however but getting used to everyone. One comes to us now sometimes and will let my kids hold him and the other one will let only my 5 year old touch her but will come beg me for food when i am cooking lol... they are 9 and 10 weeks old and are great mousers already.. i had to chase the little boy under my bed and fight with him (he won) to try and get a mouse that he ended up eating just three days after bringing them home.

  2. Hi Melody, Found your blog from "Frugally Sustainable" and wanted to say hi. I love finding new blogs written by folks in parts of the country I'm not all that familiar with, so will enjoy getting caught up on your story. I've read some backposts and love reading about the farm, your budget process and frugal living thoughts. The copperheads - NOT SO MUCH!! LOL! I look forward to staying in touch with your life and your family. Sharon
